I was going to submit this piece for my assignment, but decided against it, as I felt it was too busy and wasn’t 100% happy with the way it turned out.
I choose an assortment of my son’s plush ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ themed character toys, and arranged them into a still life.
I then used charcoal to draw them and to represent the shadows. I used a putty eraser to pull out the highlights.
I worked on A2 paper, as this is the biggest size that will fit on my table, where I do my drawing! Even at this larger size, it was difficult to really create the smaller characters, as I am getting used to representing them larger. There is a lot of detail in the subjects I had chosen. This is hard to represent using a stick of willow charcoal. I broke the charcoal into smaller pieces, but it was still a challenge.
I feel like the shadow and highlights look inconsistent, but that is how they looked to me when I was recreating them on the paper.
I Added a splash of watercolour to certain areas, but not sure as to whether this improved the look, or destroyed it. I will have to experiment more in future, with charcoal and watercolour.
